Grief occurs when you lose something or someone in your life that meant a great deal to you. It can also be felt during life’s changes.
Grief can have a huge impact on our lives, and one can experience visceral raw pain, shock, psychomotor paralysis, numbness, and distress. One can feel lost, hopeless and experience sadness, anger, guilt, and confusion. There is no linear path for grief. It is cyclical and can feel overwhelming at times.
There are myriad levels of grief, each met with its own challenges and opportunity for growth.
A few examples of life events that may trigger grief:
- Death of a loved one
- Death of a pet
- Loss of your health
- Traumatic injuries
- Relationship Changes (with self or others)
- Suicide
- Relocating
- Job loss / Change in career
- Children moving out of your home
